What is Snehavasti ?

Snehavasti (Matra Vasti) is the oil-based Basti therapy warm medicated oil introduced gently into the rectum and retained for 1-6 hours (or as prescribed). Where Kashayavasti is the purifying Basti, Snehavasti is the nourishing Basti used to pacify and nourish Vata in the large intestine after the cleansing phase, or as a standalone oil enema for specific Vata conditions. It can be administered as a standalone therapy or in alternation with Kashayavasti in a complete Basti programme.

The Ritual Experience
A thoughtfully guided process designed to relax the body and calm the mind
01
The Need

After the purification of Kashayavasti, the colon requires nourishment — the Vata that has been cleansed must be replaced with the oily, warm, grounding quality that Vata needs for balance. Snehavasti also functions as a powerful standalone therapy for lower body Vata conditions where nourishment rather than purification is the primary therapeutic need.

02
Preparation & Anointing

The prescribed medicated oil — typically Dhanwantaram tailam or a specifically formulated Vata-pacifying oil — is warmed to the correct temperature. The patient receives a light meal before the procedure (unlike the empty-stomach requirement for Kashayavasti). The oil is drawn into the Vasti vessel and prepared for administration.

03
Synchronized Flow

The warm medicated oil is introduced into the rectum gently and slowly. The patient is assisted in lying in the prescribed position to facilitate even distribution of the oil through the lower colon. The oil is retained for the prescribed duration — 1 to 6 hours — during which the colon absorbs the medicinal compounds from the oil.

04
The Afterglow

The oil is eventually expelled naturally. The deep lubrication of the lower colon, the Vata-pacifying action of the retained oil, and the nourishment of the colonic wall produce a specific quality of abdominal ease and systemic grounding. The spine, the lower body, and the nervous system all benefit from the sustained nourishment delivered by Snehavasti.

The Alchemy of  Benefits

Holistic outcomes that nurture both mind and body

The Alchemy of  Benefits
Vata Pacification in the Lower Body
Vata Pacification in the Lower Body

Snehavasti delivers the warm, oily nourishment that Vata requires directly to its primary seat — the large intestine. This direct Vata pacification produces systemic effects throughout the body: improved sleep, reduced anxiety, better joint mobility, and a grounding calm that oral Vata-pacifying medicines rarely achieve with the same immediacy.

Intestinal Lubrication
Intestinal Lubrication

The warm medicated oil lubricates the entire large intestinal wall — addressing the dryness and spasm that cause constipation, the colonic friction that contributes to abdominal pain, and the rectal dryness associated with painful bowel movements.

Spinal & Nervous System Nourishment
Spinal & Nervous System Nourishment

The anatomical proximity of the rectum and lower colon to the sacral nerve plexus means that the nourishing effect of Snehavasti reaches the lower spinal nerves directly. Lumbar conditions, sacral nerve pain, and lower body neurological weakness all benefit from regular Snehavasti sessions.

Post-Purification Restoration
Post-Purification Restoration

Following Kashayavasti or other Panchakarma purification procedures, Snehavasti restores the nourishment and protective coating that cleansing has removed — completing the purification-nourishment cycle that is the fundamental principle of all Panchakarma therapy.

Unlike Kashayavasti, Snehavasti is not immediately expelled — the oil is retained within the colon for the prescribed duration to allow maximum absorption of the medicinal compounds through the colonic wall. The patient rests quietly during this period. The oil is then expelled naturally.
