What is Naranga Kizhi ?

Naranga Kizhi is a distinctive Kerala Ayurvedic treatment in which boluses of sliced lemon, herbal powders, rock salt, medicinal herbs, and garlic are prepared together and dipped in warm medicated oil before being applied as a heated massage across the body. The combination of the sour and pungent properties of the lemon and spice ingredients with the anti-inflammatory herbs creates a uniquely effective therapy for chronic pain conditions, particularly those involving deep muscular and joint stiffness.

A thoughtfully guided process designed to relax the body and calm the mind
01
The Need

Chronic rheumatic conditions — where inflammation has been present long enough to create deep tissue changes, joint rigidity, and the specific ache of long-standing stiffness — require a therapy that combines anti-inflammatory action with deep heat penetration and the mobilising properties of sour and pungent medicinal ingredients. Naranga Kizhi delivers all three.

02
Preparation & Anointing

The lemon slices, herbal powders, rock salt, selected herbs, and garlic are combined and tied tightly into muslin boluses. These are dipped in warm medicated oil immediately before the session begins. A brief preparatory massage prepares the skin and opens the channels.

03
Synchronized Flow

The heated lemon-herb boluses are applied with firm, rhythmic strokes across the body — paying particular attention to the affected joints and the areas of chronic stiffness. The lemon's citric acid combined with the heat of the oil creates a specific penetrating quality that patients describe as both intense and relieving. The session typically lasts 60 minutes.

04
The Afterglow

A notable reduction in joint stiffness and pain is typically reported within and immediately following the session. The lemon's properties leave the skin with a slight brightness. Mobility in affected joints — particularly the shoulder, cervical spine, and lower back — improves measurably after each session.

Frozen Shoulder & Cervical Spondylosis

The specific mobility-restoring properties of Naranga Kizhi make it a primary prescription for frozen shoulder and cervical spondylosis — conditions characterised by progressive restriction of movement that responds specifically to the penetrating warmth and medicinal properties of this therapy.

Joint Mobility Restoration
Joint Mobility Restoration

Regular Naranga Kizhi sessions produce a progressive restoration of range of motion in affected joints. The heat, the medicinal herbs, and the mechanical pressure of the bolus application work together to break down the adhesions and capsular tightening that restrict joint movement.

Pain Reduction
Pain Reduction

The rock salt component of the bolus preparation has a specific analgesic action when combined with heat — drawing out excess fluid from inflamed tissue and reducing the osmotic pressure that contributes to pain in swollen joints.
